Character & Training

The American Curl is considered extremely people-oriented and intelligent. It is known for its friendly demeanor, making it an ideal family member. Its playfulness often persists into old age, so it enjoys being kept busy with interactive toys. They are eager to learn and can often master small tricks. Despite their playfulness, they never appear frantic or pushy. They thoroughly enjoy their humans' company and love following them around the house. Gentle training based on positive reinforcement is very successful with this breed.

Living & Exercise

Because the American Curl is very adaptable, it feels comfortable in an apartment. Nevertheless, it needs sufficient space for climbing and romping, making a well-equipped cat tree essential. It highly values daily playtime with its owners. A secured balcony is gladly used as an observation post. It is not a cat that enjoys being left alone for long periods. Daily structure and daily engagement significantly promote its well-being.

Health & Grooming

The American Curl is considered a robust and healthy breed without excessive breed-specific hereditary diseases. The characteristic ears are sensitive and require careful cleaning to prevent buildup. Its coat is easy to care for as it has little undercoat. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove loose hair and maintain shine. Nutrition should be high-quality to support its agility and health in the long term. Regular health check-ups at the vet are advisable, as with any cat.

History

The history of the American Curl began in 1981 in California with a stray cat named Shulamith. She had striking backward-curved ears and later gave birth to kittens with the same feature. This piqued the interest of breeders who realized it was a natural mutation. The breed was systematically developed over the following years, always focusing on a robust physique. In 1986, the breed was officially recognized by the TICA. Since then, it has enjoyed great popularity worldwide due to its distinctive appearance.
