Character & Training

Bengal cats are highly intelligent, curious, and extremely energetic. Their temperament is reminiscent of small wild cats; they love to climb, jump, and hunt. They are very trainable and can often even learn to play fetch. Nevertheless, they are very loyal and affectionate toward their owners. Boredom should definitely be avoided, as they tend to creatively remodel their environment if unengaged.

Living & Exercise

Keeping this breed strictly indoors requires an enormous amount of environmental enrichment. They need floor-to-ceiling cat trees, wall-mounted climbing opportunities, and constant engagement with interactive toys. A secure balcony or a cat-proofed garden is highly recommended due to their high need for exercise. Without sufficient stimulation, Bengal cats can develop behavioral issues.

Health & Grooming

The Bengal is generally a robust and healthy breed. However, there are breed-specific dispositions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and certain genetic eye conditions. A high-quality, protein-rich diet is essential for their active lifestyle. Grooming is very straightforward, as a short brushing once a week is perfectly sufficient to maintain their glossy coat.

History

The origin story of the Bengal cat began in the United States in the 1960s. Jean Mill intentionally crossed the small Asian leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) with short-haired domestic cats. The goal was to breed a house cat with the wild appearance of a leopard but a gentle, domesticated temperament. After many years of selective breeding, the breed gained official recognition.
