Character & Training

The Bombay cat is characterized by an extremely friendly and affectionate nature. It is highly people-oriented and often follows its owners through the house like a shadow. Despite its playfulness, it remains pleasantly calm and balanced indoors. It is very intelligent and responds well to training with patience and positive reinforcement. Because it is highly social, it should never be left alone for long periods.

Living & Exercise

Being highly adaptable, the Bombay cat feels perfectly comfortable in an apartment. However, it requires sufficient stimulation, such as interactive toys or climbing and scratching furniture, to engage its intelligence. A secured balcony is often used as a vantage point. As it loves its family, it should always have the opportunity to participate in the household's social life.

Health & Grooming

The Bombay cat is a robust and healthy breed that can reach a high age with proper care. Its short, sleek coat requires minimal effort; occasional brushing to enhance its shine is usually sufficient. There are no breed-specific hereditary diseases that occur with above-average frequency. Regular veterinary check-ups and a high-quality diet form the foundation of its well-being.

History

The breed was developed in the 1950s by Nikki Horner in the USA. The goal was to create a cat that looked like a black panther but possessed the gentle nature of a domestic cat. By selectively breeding black American Shorthairs with Burmese cats, the Bombay was created. It was officially recognized as a breed in 1976 and has enjoyed great popularity ever since.
