Character & Training

Javanese cats are known for their immense affection and intelligence. They are very curious and love to be involved in all their owner's activities. Their high capacity for learning makes them very responsive to tricks and clicker training. As they are very talkative, they express their moods loudly. They are playful and often remain active well into old age. Being left alone at home should be avoided, as they truly need their companions.

Living & Exercise

Because they are very active and curious, the Javanese needs plenty of variety. Climbing trees, puzzle toys, and interactive games are essential to keep them stimulated. They are suitable for apartment living, provided the owner invests plenty of time. A secured balcony or cat-proofed garden is often welcomed. As they are very social, they usually get along well with other cats or dogs in the household.

Health & Grooming

The breed is considered robust, although it retains the oriental tendency for a slender build. Caring for their silky, medium-length coat is straightforward, as they lack an undercoat and are less prone to matting. Occasional brushing is enough to keep the fur silky. Due to a tendency for tartar, regular dental care and veterinary check-ups are highly recommended. A balanced diet is important to maintain their ideal weight.

History

Contrary to their name, the breed has no connection to the island of Java. They originated in North America between the 1950s and 1970s by breeders aiming for a longhaired Siamese with new color combinations. They are closely related to the Balinese and Oriental Shorthair breeds. In many breeding associations, they are now categorized as the Javanese Division of the Balinese, as they essentially share the same body type and temperament.
