Character & Training

Siamese cats are often called 'dogs among cats' because they are extremely people-oriented and eager to learn. They are characterized by their high intelligence, curiosity, and boundless playfulness. A central feature is their enormous need to communicate – they vocalize their daily life loudly and demand attention. Those who own a Siamese are rarely bored, as they take a very active part in their owners' lives. They are easily trained and often learn to fetch through play. A lack of attention can lead to behavioral problems, which is why they absolutely require social bonding.

Living & Exercise

The Siamese is a very active breed that needs plenty of space to climb and romp around. Since they form close bonds with their owners, they are well-suited for apartment living with sufficient enrichment. Tall cat trees, interactive toys, and mental challenges like clicker training are a must for these intelligent animals. Because they are very social, keeping them as a single cat is not recommended; a suitable companion is usually essential for their well-being. Outdoor access is possible but requires a safe environment.

Health & Grooming

Siamese cats are generally robust but have a breed-typical predisposition to certain health issues. These include eye diseases such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) as well as tendencies towards respiratory problems or metabolic diseases like amyloidosis. Due to their short coat with little undercoat, they are sensitive to cold, so a warm sleeping spot is important. Coat care is extremely uncomplicated; occasional brushing to support the shedding process is perfectly sufficient. Regular veterinary check-ups are advisable to detect breed-typical issues early.

History

The roots of the Siamese cat lie in Thailand, where it was formerly known as 'Siam'. For centuries, they were revered as sacred temple cats and kept by the Thai elite and monks. At the end of the 19th century, the first specimens reached Great Britain and Europe as diplomatic gifts, where they quickly attracted great admiration. Their distinctive point coloration and blue eyes made them one of the most famous cat breeds worldwide. Over the decades, the breeding goal of modern Siamese cats has shifted towards a slimmer, extremely athletic physique.
