Character & Training

The Afghan Hound impresses with a dignified distance and almost cat-like independence. They are not dogs for blind obedience but rather free-spirited partners who grant loyalty only through trust. While often reserved with strangers, they are gentle and affectionate within their family circle. As a sighthound with a strong hunting instinct, training requires immense patience, empathy, and positive reinforcement, as any form of pressure is counterproductive for this proud and sensitive breed.

Living & Exercise

Despite its imposing appearance and speed, the Afghan is a calm and unobtrusive companion indoors. They cherish soft resting places and a relaxed atmosphere. Apartment living is feasible with proper exercise, but a house with a large, securely fenced garden is ideal. As passionate sprinters, they need regular opportunities for off-leash running in secure areas, as their intense prey drive often makes walking off-leash in the wild a risky endeavor.

Health & Grooming

The striking long coat is the breed's pride but requires daily, time-intensive grooming to prevent matting and skin issues. Generally robust, they have a predisposition to a breed-specific neurological condition called Afghan Myelopathy. Additionally, due to their low body fat percentage, these sighthounds are often highly sensitive to anesthesia. High-quality nutrition and regular health screenings, particularly focusing on joints and eyes, are essential for ensuring a long and vital life for this noble companion.

History

The roots of this ancient breed lie in the rugged high mountains of Afghanistan. For millennia, they were highly valued hunting dogs used for chasing ibex and predators across difficult terrain. Their long coat served as protection against the region's extreme climatic conditions. It wasn't until the late 19th century that British officers brought the first specimens to Europe, where they quickly became symbols of exoticism, luxury, and extravagant elegance in the canine world.
