Origins trace back to the Cape Colony, where European settlers crossed their dogs with the semi-domesticated, ridged hunting dogs of the indigenous Khoikhoi people. Originally bred by Boers as fearless farm guardians and hunters, they were famous for tracking lions and holding them at bay. The first formal breed standard was established in 1922 in Zimbabwe, cementing this resilient survivor's status as the only recognized breed from Southern Africa.
