Character & Training

The Russian Blue is renowned for its intelligence and gentle, loyal nature. It forms a deep bond with its humans while remaining pleasantly unobtrusive. Toward strangers, it is often initially reserved and observant. Training is usually straightforward, as it is very eager to learn. It is not a cat that constantly demands attention. Nevertheless, it enjoys playing and displays an agile and athletic side.

Living & Exercise

This breed is excellently suited for apartment living as it is adaptable and calm. It requires sufficient climbing opportunities and interactive toys to stay physically and mentally engaged. A cat-proofed balcony is often gratefully accepted as a viewing platform. Despite its adaptability, it appreciates a consistent daily routine. It thrives best in a quiet, stable household environment.

Health & Grooming

The Russian Blue is considered a robust and long-lived breed. Genetic diseases are rare, though one should ensure breeding from reputable sources. Due to its dense, short coat, grooming is extremely minimal; occasional brushing is perfectly sufficient. High-quality nutrition is the foundation for a shiny coat and overall health. Regular routine check-ups with a veterinarian should still be a matter of course.

History

The roots of this breed are often traced back to the Russian port city of Arkhangelsk, from where it was brought to Great Britain in the 19th century. British sailors were fascinated by the silvery-blue coat and green eyes. After the World Wars, the breed was nearly extinct and was rebuilt through outcrossing. Today, the Russian Blue is prized worldwide for its striking appearance and calm temperament.
